Man convicted of murder denied new trial in 1995 death

EVERETT, Wash. — The state Court of Appeals has upheld the murder conviction of a man accused in the stabbing death of a woman who disappeared after work in 1995.

The Daily Herald reports  the court denied 48-year-old Danny Giles' request for a new trial Monday.

Giles sought to have the conviction tossed, arguing that his trial judge didn't allow jurors to hear about other possible suspects. Giles says his lawyers should've been allowed to present evidence showing that three other men could've been charged with the crime, including a former sheriff's deputy.

The appeals court found there wasn't sufficient evidence connecting the men to the woman's killing.

Giles was sentenced in 2014 to nearly 48 years in prison for Patti Berry's death.

Prosecutors brought charges against Giles two decades after she died after DNA evidence tied him to the crime.
